Conversations and Meditations

Conversations and Meditations, hosted by Justin Martin, intends to share the talented and interesting characters of the Riverdell Spiritual Centre community. A combination of ’get to know you’ interviews, light-hearted conversations, and explanations of upcoming events. Coupled with the sharing of meditations, philosophies, and experiences will offer the opportunity to understand better what Riverdell Spiritual Centre offers. As the Riverdell Business Manager, Justin meets a diverse and interesting range of people that often educate him on ideas that he was previously not aware of. He doesn’t always agree with them, but he is always fascinated and genuinely interested in the perspective being offered. He invites you to join him as he explores the stories and beliefs of the people that he chats with during these sessions. During this episode, Dr Andrew Horwood connects with us over Zoom and shares some personal history and wisdom. Andrew is the standing Treasurer of EMSA, a practising GP and pain specialist, and a former resident of Riverdell Spiritual Centre.
We discussed the social atmosphere of his youth when Marxist Philosophy became a popular response to the horrors of WW2. A time in which many intellectuals resonated with Karl Marx’s adage that “Religion is the Opium of the People.”
We learn of Andrew’s journey of self-discovery, the profound realisation sparked by the birth of his children, as well as his evolution as a medical GP. Andrew speaks about his connection to the Emissaries and his appreciation for Lew Childre, the founder of the Heartmath foundation, and we consider the importance of grief, tears, and community. Please join me in this conversation, and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed recording it.
If you are interested in learning more about the Heartmath foundation, Watch this Video for a better understanding.

Episode 6. of Conversations and Meditations takes on a different format than you may have come to expect.
In this episode, Justin offers a meditation on the breath.
The breath is a potent tool for meditation. And is ideal for beginner and experienced practitioners alike. Bringing one's focus to the breath can help alleviate stress and is readily available to us anytime.
This meditation lasts approximately 15 minutes, and I recommend you find a place where you will not be disturbed for at least this long.
If you want to skip the intro, go ahead to 2:30.
With Loving-Kindness,
Justin

A bit about Justin...

These days, Justin is a husband and father interested in his family, Meditation, physical fitness, adventure, and music. It wasn't always like this, however, and in his youth, Justin struggled to find balance in his life. As a child, several schools removed him due to his inability to conform and self-regulate. In adolescence, Justin became self-destructive, reactive and insecure. Gradually though, Justin gained a new perspective and began to develop an attitude of gratitude, in no small part, thanks to the love and support that he enjoyed from his wife, Sarah. After expanding his understanding of the word and how people live within it, Justin finds himself in the unique position of serving at Riverdell Spiritual Centre. Inspired by the people he meets at Riverdell Spiritual Centre, Justin created this Podcast to share his good fortune with the world. Justin has a great sense of compassion for those who also find it difficult to 'fit in' and finds great satisfaction in his part in creating a home at Riverdell for anyone who might seek it.
